History
Mattias was born to a Nevarran father from a merchant family and an Orlesian mother of low nobility. Orlesian mother had strong, overbearing religious family who were reluctant for the marriage due to... essentially racism regarding the Nevarran mortalisi shit. They had three children and, at the mother's family's request, they spent their lives shuffling between Nevarra and Orlais.

Tensions between the father and mother's families increased and came to a head when Matthias, the youngest son, showed signs of magic. Despite the father wanting his son educated in Nevarra, the mother's (heavily religious) family threatened to annul the marriage if Matthias was not brought to an Orlesian Circle. In a compromise, both families pulled strings and assured Matthias was placed in one of the civilized Circles (is this even right??), the White Spire (WHY DID THE WHITE SPIRE BLOW UP WHY ARE THERE ONLY TWO CIRCLES IN ORLAIS IF IT'S ALL IMPORTANT AND CHANTRY-ESQUE WTF).
